Welcome to the Liverpool Hammams Research Group Website
This website contains the research of two main projects. The AHRC project [2006-2010] is entitled, "The historic Islamic baths of North Africa and their survival into the 21st century", the second research project is in partnership in the European consortium for the HAMMAM project, funded under the 6th Framework Programme- Specific Targeted Research Projects (STREP) (1.9 Million Euros). The project deals with the development of multidisciplinary methods of analysis of hammam buildings in the Mediterranean Region. One of the aims is to develop future scenarios for the sustainable adaptive re-use of hammam buildings in the Mediterranean region. This project will run between 2005-08.
Research Group Leader : Dr. Magda Sibley
Research Associates: Fodil Fadli & Iain Jackson
Please contact Dr. Sibley and see http://www.hammams.org for more information.
The HAMMAM research project has focused on six main case studies [listed left, however many more other examples are also included as part of the contextual study]. Included on this site are floor plans, photographs and descriptions of each hammam, with particular emphasis on the architectural typology and restoration. Please click on the hammam name for further information.
This research is collaborative and the data has been gathered by several research partners throughout Europe and North Africa.
