The Arts & Humanities Research Council [AHRC], generously supported a research project, to catalogue and document Nek Chand's Rock Garden. This project was started in September 2003.

Iain Jackson originally completed a dissertation on the Rock Garden as part of his B.Arch degree at Liverpool School of Architecture. Following discussions with Dr. Soumyen Bandyopadhyay an application was made to the AHRC for funding and the project has funded Jackson's PhD as well as a larger research project.

The aim of the research was to:

catalogue all the fixed rocks and sculptures found at the site.

Record and survey the major architectural developments and structures.

To produce a catalogue of the above data and to represent the spatial aspects of the site through drawings and computer models.

In addition to gathering the data, the Rock Garden has also been analysed and positioned within the larger sphere of postcolonial and Modernist studies.
